Anthony Taylor Ends Outstanding Premier League Refereeing Career After Twenty Years of Service and Hundreds of Memorable Football Matches
Veteran referee Anthony Taylor has retired after more than 20 years, ending a career that included Premier League, World Cup and major cup finals.
Anthony Taylor has officially announced his retirement from football refereeing, bringing an end to one of the longest and most respected careers in English football. The 47 year old decided that now is the right time to step away after more than 20 years of officiating at the highest level.
Taylor leaves the game after refereeing 831 matches during his career. Out of those, he handled 432 Premier League games across 16 seasons, making him one of the most experienced referees in the history of England’s top division. He also worked in many important matches both in England and around the world. 
His final match came at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States. Taylor was the referee for the Round of 16 match between Portugal and Spain. After that game, he decided it was time to end his career and begin a new chapter in his life.
During his career, Taylor took charge of almost every major domestic final in England. He refereed the FA Cup Finals in 2017 and 2020, the League Cup Final in 2015, the Community Shield in 2015, and the Championship play-off final in 2018. These appointments showed the trust that English football had in his ability to manage the biggest games.
Taylor also built a strong international career. He spent 14 years on FIFA’s international referees list and officiated at the 2022 and 2026 FIFA World Cups. He also worked at UEFA Euro 2020 and Euro 2024, as well as other important international competitions. His experience made him one of England’s best known referees around the world.
In his retirement message, Taylor said refereeing at the highest level had been a great honor. However, he admitted that the pressure and constant criticism were very difficult. Every decision made by top referees is watched by millions of fans, players, coaches, and the media. Taylor said he feels the time is right to move on and thanked his family, friends, assistants, and colleagues for supporting him throughout his career. 
Like many referees, Taylor’s career was not without controversy. Some fans praised his calm approach and strong control of matches, while others questioned some of his decisions. Even so, he remained one of the Premier League’s most trusted officials and continued to receive appointments for the biggest games in football.
Howard Webb, the head of England’s professional referees, praised Taylor for his professionalism, leadership, and dedication. Webb said Taylor has inspired many younger referees and has helped improve officiating in English football.
