In a gripping quarter-final clash at Kansas City Stadium, defending champions Argentina edged past Switzerland 3–1 after extra time to secure their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-finals.
Alexis Mac Allister gave Argentina an early lead in the 10th minute, assisted by Lionel Messi. Switzerland fought back with resilience, equalizing through Dan Ndoye in the 67th minute. The momentum shifted when Swiss forward Breel Embolo was sent off shortly after for simulation. Despite being a man down, Switzerland defended heroically to force the game into extra time.
Argentina finally broke the deadlock in the 112th minute with a spectacular strike from Julián Alvarez, followed by a clinching goal from Lautaro Martínez. This hard-fought victory sets up a highly anticipated semi-final showdown against England. Argentina remains on course in their pursuit of becoming the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to successfully defend the World Cup title.
