How the League’s Growth Could Create More Opportunities for Women’s Basketball
Explore how WNBA expansion could bring new teams, more jobs, bigger fan bases and more opportunities for players as women’s basketball continues to grow.
The WNBA has continued to attract more attention from basketball fans, and the league's growth has created more discussion about expansion.
Adding more teams could give more players the chance to compete professionally while bringing WNBA basketball to new cities and communities.
More Teams Means More Opportunities
One major benefit of expansion is the possibility of creating more roster spots.
Talented players who may struggle to find a place on an existing team could have another opportunity to continue their professional careers.
More teams could also give young players additional chances to develop their skills.
New Cities Could Welcome the WNBA
Expansion could bring professional women's basketball to more communities.
A new WNBA team can give local fans a team to support and create opportunities for people who may never have attended a WNBA game before.
For basketball fans, having a professional team nearby can make the sport feel more personal.
More Fans Could Follow the League
New teams can also bring new supporters.
Families, young basketball players and longtime fans may become interested when a team represents their city.
Those supporters can attend games, buy team merchandise and follow their players throughout the season.
Local Communities Can Benefit
A professional sports team can create more activity around a city.
Games can bring fans to arenas and create opportunities for workers, businesses and community organizations.
WNBA teams can also become involved in youth basketball programs and other local activities.
More Rivalries Could Develop
New teams can create new matchups.
Over time, repeated games between competitive teams can develop into exciting rivalries.
Fans may begin to look forward to certain matchups every season, adding another layer of excitement to the league.
More Opportunities for Young Girls
Expansion can also have an impact beyond professional basketball.
When young girls see a WNBA team in their city, they can have a nearby example of what is possible in women's sports.
A local team can inspire more children to play basketball and follow the sport.
The Future Looks Bigger
The growth of women's basketball is creating new possibilities for players, fans and communities.
If the WNBA continues to expand carefully, new teams could help the league reach more people while giving more athletes the chance to play at the highest level.
More teams could mean more players, more fans, more cities and even more exciting stories for women's basketball.
